Salvation Army Seeks Help with Angel Tree Program | News
KANSAS CITY, MO. — Imagine a Christmas morning without brightly wrapped presents under a beautifully decorated tree, or a traditional holiday meal baking in the oven.
Unfortunately, that is the reality many Kansas City families are facing this holiday season. Each year, The Salvation Army provides thousands of gifts, toys and holiday food boxes to families in need in the metropolitan area.
“This past year, we registered a 16 percent increase in the number of families seeking emergency assistance,” said Major Charles Smith, divisional commander of The Salvation Army in Kansas City. “It’s a struggle for many people these days just to make it day to day, let alone to handle the additional expense of providing a nice Christmas for their families.”
The Salvation Army has three holiday toy programs in which the community is invited to participate. Adopt-A-Family provides gifts and toys for thousands of families in need in the Kansas City metropolitan area. To participate, please go to www.salvationarmy.us and click on the Adopt-a-Family link. After filling out a short form, the donor will receive an email with details about their chosen family and delivery instructions.
The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program runs from November 25 to December 16 at Oak Park Mall, Zona Rosa, Metro North, Independence Center and various Wal-Mart stores throughout the metropolitan area. Dozens of angel tags on each tree represent a local child in need and their gift wishes. Shoppers or employees pick a tag and buy the gifts listed and return the gifts to the tree to be distributed to the children.
The Salvation Army nationally is also teaming up this year with J.C. Penney for an on-line giving program to benefit children and seniors. The Salvation Army Angel Giving Tree Online Program allows people to adopt Angels from their local community through a website located at www.jcp.com/angel. Customers will be guided through a short online Angel selection process.
