Police: Woman Beats Man with Electrical Cord in Attempt to Steal Casino Winnings

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A lucky streak at a casino made an Overland Park, Kan., man a target on his drive home. Police said the man cashed out his chips and was driving home when he realized someone was following him.

“People are aware of who wins big jackpots,” said officer Gary Mason with Overland Park Police Department. “It’s easy to get lost in the moment when you’re seeing green.”

On Saturday afternoon, Overland Park police said a man cashed out close to $800 in chips at Harrah’s Casino and headed home. Police said he wasn’t alone. Deanna Winfield, 48, was hot on his trail.

“She obviously knew he had won some money and decided at some point to follow him home,” Mason said.

Police said Winfield followed the man out of the casino parking lot and continued following him nearly 20 miles toward his Overland Park home. Before turning into his driveway, the man figured out something was wrong.

“He realized she was following him and instead of going home, which was a good thing, he went ahead and just kept going and got the intersection of 81st and Goodman, stopped his car and she kind of bumped him a little bit,” he said. “Just a little bump or tap.”

As the man got out of his car to exchange information, he was hit three times with an electrical cord.

“He turns around on the fourth one and confronts her and says, ‘what are you doing?’” Mason said. “And at that point she says, ‘Give me all the money you’ve got from the casino.’ He was able to grab it from her, take it away, throw it down. And he was able to get away.”

Because of casino surveillance, along with the man’s description of the suspect, Winfield is in police custody. She has been charged with aggravated battery and aggravated robbery.

Police said in situations like this it’s important to be aware of your surroundings. They advise people not to take a direct route home so you can see if someone is following you. If you notice something out of the ordinary, call police.
